The Chicago Cubs opted to protect two prospects Tuesday from next month’s Rule 5 draft. And in the process, the future of two former highly-touted prospects is in limbo. The Cubs added outfielder Owen Caissie and infielder Benjamin Cowles to the 40-man roster Tuesday and designated for assignment right-hander Adbert Alzolay and outfielder Brennen Davis to open spots.

The Chicago Cubs added Owen Caissie to their 40-man roster before Tuesday’s deadline to protect him from the upcoming Rule 5 draft. As a 6-foot-3, left-handed slugger, Caissie made that an obvious decision with his performance and potential.

The Cubs, to no one’s surprise, protected top prospect Owen Caissie, who is also the No. 34 prospect on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100. Caissie, who turned 22 in July, batted .278/.375/.473 with 29 doubles and 19 home runs in 127 games for Triple-A Iowa in 2024.
