Government and private groups are funding an over $100,000 reward for information about the death of a Mexican gray wolf in Arizona.

Killing a Mexican wolf is illegal under Arizona state law and protections under the Federal Endangered Species Act and can result in up to $50,000 in criminal penalty fines, a year in jail and a civil penalty up to $25,000, officials said.

Wildlife officials have offered up a large reward for information about how an endangered Mexican gray wolf died earlier this month.

The wolf, known as Hope, was federally protected and killing this species of wolf could result in criminal penalties. Mexican gray wolves were listed as an endangered species in the 1970s, resulting in the creation of a breeding program to boost the wolf population in the Southwest.
