An FDA inspection of a Tom’s of Maine manufacturing facility led to the discovery of “significant violations” including bacteria in water used to make toothpaste and a black “mold-like” substance.

Tom's of Maine has received a warning from the Food and Drug Administration about a "black mold-like substance," as well as bacteria in the water, at the Sanford factory where its toothpaste is made.

The agency is requiring Tom's to submit several documents, including assessments and remediation plans for its operations, contamination hazards, testing methods and more.
