Having a higher level of cardiorespiratory fitness reduced the risk for cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s, even in people at high genetic risk, a new study found.

Among people with moderate or high genetic dementia risk scores, high cardiorespiratory fitness attenuated dementia risk by 35% (IRR 0.65, 95% CI 0.52-0.83) compared with low fitness, Xu and colleagues said in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Experts said that ‘cardiorespiratory fitness’ could be used as a predictor for thinking and memory problems in older age.
