In a new book, Pope Francis called for an investigation into whether Israel’s ground offensive in Gaza constitutes a genocide, sparking intense debate about the war — and also raising questions about the tangible impact that papal statements have on Catholics and global politics.

It's the first time that Francis has openly called for an investigation of genocide allegations over Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip.

The committee added that Israeli officials have publicly supported policies to destroy “vital water, sanitation and food systems” in Gaza as well as prevent access to fuel. Israel has previously rejected accusations of genocide in the Palestinian enclave.
