First it was an album in 1971, then an autobiography in 1976 and later a feature film in 1980. Now the story of country music icon and Eastern Kentucky-born singer Loretta Lynn will be celebrated in the form of a new Broadway musical.

Tony Award-winning actress Sutton Foster, plus director, music producer Sam Gold, Jeanine Tesori are taking Loretta Lynn's life story to Broadway.

Loretta Lynn approved of Sutton Foster's casting in 'Coal Miner's Daughter' musical before she died at age 90 in 2022.

A Broadway production of the 1980 film “Coal Miner’s Daughter" is in the works with Sutton Foster playing Loretta Lynn in the upcoming musical. The story follows Lynn’s journey from a humble Kentucky upbringing to the peak of country music.

People close to Lynn are working on the musical: The singer's daughter Patsy Lynn, who has played a key role in her mother's musical career for decades, is a contributing producer. So is Nancy Russell, who was formerly Lynn's manager.

The musical will be directed by Sam Gold and feature music production by Jeanine Tesori. A musical about country music star Loretta Lynn’s life is under development with Sutton Foster attached as the star.
