Archaeologists in Egypt have found the tomb of King Thutmose II — the first discovery of an ancient royal tomb since King Tutankhamun's in 1922.

The ministry of antiquities said the discovery of the tomb of Thutmose II, whose wife, Hatshepsut, took the throne after his death, was the first excavation of a royal tomb near the Valley of the Kings since 1922.

For the first time in over a century, a royal Egyptian tomb has been uncovered by archaeologists. The tomb was uncovered in 2022, but has only now been confirmed as the final resting place of King Thutmose II.

Egypt's antiquities authority says it has found the ancient tomb of King Thutmose II, the first royal burial to be located since Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922.

The historically important reveal is said to mark the end of a search for the lost tombs of the kings of ancient Egypt’s Eighteenth Dynasty — which ran from approximately 1550 BC to 1292 BC. The finding comes more than one hundred years after King Tut’s remains were discovered in 1922, CBS News reported.

But that doesn’t make the discovery of his final resting place any less important. On February 18, the Egyptian government announced that an international team of archeologists have finally confirmed the tomb’s location—making it the first and most significant royal find since the identification of King Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922.

The tomb of Thutmose II, who ruled about 3,500 years ago, was discovered by an Egyptian-British team near the Valley of the Kings.
