New York City beaches will be closed for swimming on Wednesday and Thursday as Hurricane Erin is expected to bring life-threatening surf and rip currents to much of the East Coast

The National Hurricane Center is also watching two tropical disturbances to the east of Erin that could develop into named cyclones. With thousands of miles of warm ocean water, hurricanes known as Cape Verde storms are some of the most dangerous that threaten North America.

Erin, currently a Category 2 storm in the Atlantic, is not expected to make landfall in the region but will churn up hazardous conditions along the New Jersey, New York City and Long Island shorelines.

Mayor Eric Adams said swimmers would be banned from the city's beaches on Wednesday and Thursday. Several beaches across the Jersey Shore and Long Island were also closed due to the storm.

Hurricane Erin, which formed on August 11 and quickly intensified, is expected to largely impact the Outer Banks region of North Carolina and portions of coastal Virginia — though forecasters warn the storm’s impacts will also be felt in the northeast.
